Two buildings in Manchester will be lit up to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Wednesday (August 24) will mark 31 years since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union.
It will also mark six months since the country was invaded by Russia. To mark Ukrainian Independence Day, a number of events will take place throughout the city-region including a family fun day at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Cheetham Hill. READ MORE: Mum with two babies trapped in Tesco car park for 90 minutes during heatwave slapped with £70 fine During the event, which runs from 12.30pm to 9pm, attendees will be able to enjoy Ukrainian food and dance to traditional Ukrainian music.
There will also be kids entertainment, featuring special appearances from ‘the bubble man’ and Louby Lou. In addition, Manchester City Council will light up Central Library and the 40m Tower of Light landmark in yellow and blue - the colours of the Ukrainian flag - to show the city’s solidarity with the country.
An ongoing #SunflowersForUkraine social media campaign will be boosted throughout the day with messages of solidarity and support, alongside pictures of people growing sunflowers, which is the country’s national flower.
