Manchester United ‘have just been notified’ that a deal which would take Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy to Old Trafford could be on the cards, according to transfer insider Dean Jones. The Red Devils have made a woeful start to the season, having been beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, but boss Erik ten Hag may freshen up his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are considering a move for Vardy ahead of the transfer window slamming shut. The report suggests ten Hag is scouring the market for attacking options and although the 25-cap former England international has worked his way onto the Dutchman’s radar, Leicester are reluctant to sanction his departure.

Vardy has entered the final 12 months of his £160,000-per-week contract at the King Power Stadium, which could boost Manchester United’s chances of striking a deal as his current employers will not want to see him walk away as a free agent next summer.

But that may also play into the hands of other suitors as Chelsea are understood to be among a number of clubs monitoring the 35-year-old’s situation.
