Fan footage has captured the moment Liverpool’s talismanic centre-back Virgil van Dijk annoyed Manchester City’s players during Saturday’s Community Shield. Liverpool won the first trophy of the 2022-23 campaign thanks to a 3-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side at the King Power Stadium.
Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the 21st minute, while City substitute Julian Alvarez equalised midway through the second half.
However, late goals from Mohamed Salah and record signing Darwin Nunez sealed victory for Jurgen Klopp and his players.
Fan-captured footage of Salah’s penalty has been uploaded to social media and it shows Van Dijk channelling his inner Peter Kay by giving the ball a full-on ‘Ave it!’. Erling Haaland, who endured a bit of a nightmare against the Reds on his competitive debut for City, was seen calling for the ball as Liverpool’s players ran off celebrating.
