Liverpool secured a priceless 2-1 victory over Ajax on Tuesday evening in the most dramatic way possible. For a considerable amount of time, it looked as if Jurgen Klopp’s men would be frustrated and have to settle for a point in their second Champions League group stage encounter of the 2022/23 campaign. Mohammed Kudus’ sensational first half goal levelled the scores at 1-1 after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring and Ajax held firm after their equaliser.
But just before the end of the regulation 90, Liverpool finally broke the visitors’ resistance and struck for a second time through Joel Matip to secure their first win in Europe this season.
The Cameroonian centre-half thumped a header towards goal from Kostas Tsimikas’ well-directed corner kick and even though it was cleared by an Ajax defender, the Goal Decision System kicked in and declared that the ball had indeed crossed the line.
To say the home fans inside Anfield went crazy after the referee pointed to his watch would be a serious understatement… That's HUGE for Liverpool!
