"Keep An Eye On Him": Sourav Ganguly Identifies India's Leg Spinner For ODI World Cup

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has urged the management to keep an eye on veteran leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the ODI World Cup.

Chahal was part of the squad for last year's T20 World Cup in Australia but didn't play a single game as India bowed out in the semi-final after losing to England.

Ganguly feels while India have other good wrist spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi at their disposal, Chahal could be key to their chances. "(Ravi) Bishnoi and Kuldeep (Yadav) are there but (Yuzvendra) Chahal somehow misses big tournaments.

He performs extremely consistently in shorter formats, whether it is 20-over or 50-over. It is important to keep an eye on him as well," News 18 quoted Ganguly as saying on Star Sports.

India and Pakistan will square in the final on Sunday in Colombo. The absence of Yuzvendra Chahal from India's T20 World Cup 2021 squad emerged as a big talking point in the Indian cricketing spectrum, with many former cricketers and fans criticising the selection committee over the decision. Chahal, who has been a mainstay in India's white-ball team for a long period of time, couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he was snubbed for the showpiece event, especially considering the team was being led by Virat Kohli, who was also his captain at Royal Challengers Bangalore at that time.
Team India's squad for the Asian Games 2023 became the talk of the town, ever-since it was announced. With Asian Games coinciding with the ODI World Cup, the BCCI has named a second-string Indian team for the continental event in Hangzhou. The men's cricket event will be held from September 28-October 8. The team, which will be lead by Chennai Super Kings opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, also features the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Arshdeep Singh and others. Out of all the players, former India opener Aakash Chopra was surprised with the inclusion of Arshdeep into the squad.
When Royal Challengers Bangalore didn't retain leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season, the Indian cricketing spectrum saw the decision as one of the weird ones considering how well the bowler had done for the franchise over the years. Chahal, in a candid interview, admitted that he felt really bad the franchise let him go after an 8-year spell, but what he felt the worst about was the fact that they didn't even give him a call to explain the decision.
Chennai Super Kings' star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was on Friday named the captain of the Indian men's cricket team for the Asian Games in Hangzhou in China. While earlier reports had speculated that veteran India batter Shikhar Dhawan could lead in the September 19 to to October 8 event, the BCCI selectors named Gaikwad, who has been doing quite well in the IPL. Talented middle-order batter Rinku Sigh got his maiden call-up for the national team, while JItesh Sharma has been selected at the wicketkeeper of the squad.
The ICC World Cup 2023 is all set to kickstart on October 5 and Team India under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and guidance of head coach Rahul Dravid will kick off their campaign against five-time champions Australia in Chennai. It has been 10 years since India's ICC title drought and the last time they won a World Cup was in 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership. Former India captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid can turn things around for India and end the ICC title drought.
