Manchester City kick off the new domestic season when they face Arsenal in the Community Shield. Pep Guardiola’s side signed off last season in style as the club defeated Inter Milan to win the Champions League and complete the treble, having already won the Premier League and FA Cup.

There have been a few changes since then, with Mateo Kovacic signing from Chelsea and both Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez leaving the club.

City began their pre-season campaign by recording a 5-3 win over Yokohama F. Marinos at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.

This was followed by a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the same stadium before a narrow defeat to Atletico Madrid in Seoul. Next up are last season’s title rivals Arsenal at Wembley as City strive to get their hands on an early piece of silverware.

Arsenal's win over Manchester City in the Community Shield may not have been indicative of how the upcoming Premier League season will pan out but what it did was expose the frailties of a side which has won the league three years in a row. The side, which has flourished under manager Pep Guardiola, have lost in a seasoned veteran in the form of Ilkay Gundogan and his absence was felt throughout the game.  The new signing Mateo Kovacic and makeshift midfielder Julian Alvarez were not effective in the system and although the presence of a goal machine like Erling Haaland makes them a favourite on any given day, a number of new challengers have emerged for their title.
