'Impact Player' Setback For Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Despite Making Stance Clear

The meeting between the BCCI and all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners is all set to take place on July 31, ahead of the mega auction for next season.

During the meeting, the board and the franchises will discuss about number of retentions teams can make and the Right to Match (RTM) options in hand ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction.

The future of the 'Impact Player' rule will also be up for debate after garnering criticism from all corners. Star players likes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had voiced there opinions on the matter, expressing their disappointments.

For the unversed, the 'Impact Player' rule allows teams to essentially play with 12 players, meaning that they can add an extra batter or bowler at any point of the match.

Former India great Harbhajan Singh believes that Virat Kohli with his supreme fitness can easily survive the rigours of international cricket for another five years while Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma will last at least another couple of years. "Rohit can easily play for two more years. You never know with Virat Kohli's fitness, you can see him competing for five years. He is probably the fittest guy in the team," Harbhajan told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview. "You ask any 19-year-old competing with Virat (on fitness). Virat will beat him. He is that fit. I believe Virat and Rohit have a lot of cricket left in them and it is entirely up to them. If they are fit enough, they are performing and the team is winning, they should continue to play. As simple as that," the man with 700 plus international wickets said.

However, most of the other centrally contracted players are expected to participate in the four-team competition. Among the players who will draw significant attention are KL Rahul, who missed four of the five Tests against England earlier this year due to injury, and Rishabh Pant, who might be playing his first red-ball match since fully recovering from a car accident in December 2022.
