Former India player Karsan Ghavri on Wednesday slammed the decision to ignore veteran Cheteshwar Pujara for the Test series against England especially with the depleted batting line-up in the absence of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

A veteran of 103 Tests, the 36-year-old Pujara has been sidelined since the series in the West Indies, with the Indian selectors preferring to look ahead. "I don't understand the reason why Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped.

He should have been in the Indian team right from the first Test," Ghavri told PTI on the eve of the third Test here, the home ground of Pujara. "At first, Virat Kohli was not playing the first two Tests and now it has been announced that he would not be playing the remaining three Tests.

Cheteshwar was not only the greatest replacement but the greatest player they should have included," added the 72-year-old. With Kohli pulling out of the series citing "personal reasons" and Rahul injured, the Indian batting lineup has looked thin in the ongoing five-match series.

The out-of-favour duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were excluded after ignoring the directive to play Ranji Trophy, while skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli expectedly retained their place in the top bracket as the BCCI unveiled its centrally-contracted players for this year on Wednesday. The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team's campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty since leaving from the tour of South Africa in December citing personal reasons. He has instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month.
India skipper Rohit Sharma's assertion that Test opportunities should be only for those who show hunger for the format found resonance with state associations grappling with youngsters desperate to make a name in white-ball cricket but reluctant to grind it out in first-class games. With the advent of IPL, the club vs country debate has been raging for years now and Rohit's stern statement came at a time when two established names in Indian cricket -- Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan -- ignored a BCCI diktat to play Ranji Trophy quarterfinals, focussing instead on their IPL preparations.
Legendary England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan took fresh aim at the Hawkeye technology over Joe Root's dismissal on Day 3 of the fourth Test match against India in Ranchi on Sunday. During the 17th over of England's second innings, Ashwin's delivery crashed into Root's pads and although the umpire was not convinced, skipper Rohit Sharma went for a review. The replay showed that the ball pitched on the leg-stump line and was going to hit the stumps. However, Vaughan was not convinced with the decision and he took to social media to express his disappointment. "That looked a shocker for the technology .. more than half the ball was outside leg stump yet it came up Red !!!!!! Hawkeye is having a average series .. And it's done for Englands best player Root," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
