CWG 2022: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth Sail Into Badminton Singles Quarter-finals

Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth had another easy outing as they stormed into the quarterfinals of the women's and men's singles events respectively with comfortable wins at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.

Sindhu, a silver medallist at the 2018 edition, expectedly faced no resistance from Uganda's Husina Kobugabe, winning 21-10 21-9 in her pre-quarterfinal match.

Srikanth, who had also finished second best at Gold Coast, too didn't break any sweat on his way to a 21-9 21-12 win over Sri Lanka's Dumindu Abeywickrama in the men's singles.

Earlier, Indian women's pairing of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly had entered the last eight with a 21-2 21-4 win over Mauritius' Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah.

The Indian duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy crashed out of the ongoing BWF World Championships 2022 after losing in their second-round match in the women's doubles category against China's Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan on Wednesday. Playing on court 1, Ponnappa and Sikki lost the game by 15-21, 10-21. The Indian duo looked off-colour and could not match the intensity and shot-making by the Chinese. The result was a crash-out within just two straight games.

Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen continued his impressive run, trouncing Danish Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus in straight games to progress to the men's singles second round at BWF World Championships here on Monday. Sen's senior team-mates Kidambi Srikanth and H S Prannoy also won their respective first round matches. India also registered twin wins in women's and mixed doubles competition on the opening day which saw B Sai Praneeth bow out after losing in three games to world number 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.

Sen's senior team-mates Kidambi Srikanth and H S Prannoy also won their respective first round matches. The 20-year-old Sen, who had returned with a bronze on his debut in Spain last year, prevailed 21-12 21-11 over an erratic Vittinghus in his opening match.

Indian shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy turned 22 on Saturday. The men's doubles badminton star received a grand wish from India's Commonwealth Games contingent. The Sports Authority of India shared the video of the celebration on Twitter in which Satwiksairaj could be seen blushing as soon as the CWG contingent wished him happy birthday. Shuttlers Sumeeth Reddy and Kidambi Srikanth were among the ones present in the party alongside paddlers Harmeet Desai and Sharath Kamal. It is worth noting that all the players were in formal attire as they were a part of the felicitation program organised in the Prime Minister's Office for the medal winners of CWG 2022.

Lakshya Sen has been going from strength to strength in recent times. Now, he has won the men's singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with a tough win against Malaysia's NG Tze Yong on Monday. Sen fought with a lot of heart after losing the first game in the final to ultimately clinch the match 19-21, 21-19 and 21-16.
