Chess Olympiad: Post euphoria, time to make next move

Despite the 2 bronze in Chess Olympiad, there are issues that need to be addressed to take the game to the next level in India.

TOI takes a look...With a bronze medal in each section, the Chess Olympiad for first-time hosts India was a success. But even the medals warrant some stock-taking and post mortem.

In a somewhat justified euphoria following the big festival, Indian chess would do well in processing the underlying messages.

Hosting the Olympiad is not particularly in demand due to the costs involved. The USA and China have won gold medals without ever hosting the event.

Both the India-B and A-Women's teams, would be honoured with a cash prize of Rs 1 crore each for winning bronze medals in the FIDE 44th Chess Olympiad, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced in Chennai on Wednesday. The 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad came to end in Mamallapuram on Tuesday with the Uzbekistan team winning the gold medal in the open category. Seeded 14th, it did not lose even a single game on way to winning the top prize. Jakhongir Vakhidov from Uzbekistan team told NDTV that they were very satisified with the result. "We are very happy. It was complicated. Till the last moment we dis not know who's going to win. We had strong opponents like the Indian teams," he said. Team Armenia took the silver.
The India 'B' team settled for a bronze medal in the Open section while the India 'A' women's side also finished third in the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai on Tuesday. India 'B' defeated Germany 3-1 in their final round match to end at third position. Uzbekistan sprung a surprise by bagging the gold medal with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands ahead of a strong Armenian team, which beat Spain 2.5-1.5 in the final round, in the Open section. The top-seeded India 'A' women's team crashed to a 1-3 defeat in the 11th and final round to USA to see it's gold medal hopes evaporate. The Koneru Humpy-led team finished third.
Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, the team’s mentor, heaped praise on Gukesh’s run at the Olympiad. The Indian legend revealed how he found it difficult to keep pace with the youngster’s progress in the last few months. “It was just a breathless performance (by him) and we couldn’t keep up with it.
