Challenger Cup triumph evidence of progress in Saudi cricket

Victory in the 2023 Asian Cricket Council’s Challenger Cup in Thailand has catapulted Saudi Arabia’s men’s team into unchartered waters.

It also emphasised the increasing levels of competition within Asian cricket. As recently reported, the Saudi team’s success was in a 50-over one-day international competition, rather than the Twenty20 format that has become prevalent.

The Challenger Cup is the first staging post in the ACC’s restructured three-tier pathway toward the Asia Cup 2023. It is comprised of eight teams and has been designed to provide increased opportunities for a larger number of its members to display their talents.

There are 25 members of the ACC, divided into full and associate members. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, all Test-playing countries, have full-member status.

The Asia Cup 2023 is likely to be held in Pakistan, but India will play their games at a neutral venue. After a brief stalemate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are working quickly to broker a compromise that could result in both teams playing their tournament matches against one another outside of Pakistan. India are likely to play their Asia Cup 2023 matches in either England, Oman, Sri Lanka or UAE.
The countdown for the 2023 ODI World Cup has begun, with India set to host the quadrennial tournament, hoping to end their trophy drought. However, there remain a number of other teams that are more than capable of lifting the title, one of them is the Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team. In fact, former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar feels it could be an India vs Pakistan final in the showpiece event. If that happens, Akhtar wants Pakistan to go the distance and avenge the 2011 result.
Current India head coach Rahul Dravid remains one of the most respected figures in the sport. Dravid came into the Indian team as the head coach after Ravi Shastri decided to step aside in 2021. Under Dravid's guidance, India have done well but failed to lift the ICC Trophy -- T20 World Cup 2022 -- that the country desperately desires. Speaking of Dravid's performances as the head coach of the Indian team, Shastri said that the former needs to be given more time.
The Asia Cup saga is showing signs of a resolution. While the Pakistan Cricket Board is determined to host the tournament in its own country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unwilling to send the Indian team to the neighbouring country over 'security issues'. As the chatter around the topic continues, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi made a big claim, suggesting his team was threatened by an Indian over a tour of India in the past, but they still decided to come.
Ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup in October-November in India, the Asia Cup is a perfect opportunity for the continent's teams to experiment their final combination. However, there is a big cloud of uncertainty over the host venue of the event. While Pakistan were initially given the hosting rights, a surprise announcement by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, also the Asian Cricket Council chief, changed things. He said last year that India would not be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup.
