BWF World Championships: Kidambi Srikanth Bows Out In 1st round

Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth disappoints with his early exit in the first round of the ongoing Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships after being outplayed by Kenta Nishimoto in Copenhagen, Denmark on Monday.

Nishimoto defeated him in straight games by 21-14, 21-14 to advance to the second round. Earlier in the day, Lakshya Sen and Prannoy HS cruised into round two of the BWF World Championships.

First, it was the Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya who took on Mauritius's Julien Paul. Sen was absolutely dominant, beating his opponent in just 24 minutes by 21-12, 21-7.

On the other hand, Prannoy took on Finland's Kalle Koljonen. Prannoy also moved to the second round by beating Kalle by 24-22, 21-10.

HS Prannoy's dream run at the World Championships ended after he lost in three games to world number 3 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the men's singles semifinal to sign off with a bronze, extending India's record of having at least one medallist in the showpiece since 2011. The 31-year-old Prannoy squandered an opening game advantage and a 5-1 lead in the second as Vitidsarn, a three-time former world junior champion, dished out better defence and attack to win 18-21 21-13 21-14 and seal a second successive final spot. Notwithstanding the loss, it was a brilliant achievement for Prannoy as he became only the fifth Indian men's singles player to win a World Championships medal.

HS Prannoy extracted the last ounce of energy from his reservoir to stun two-time defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in a thrilling 68-minute quarterfinal to ensure a medal for India in the World Badminton Championship on Friday. In a nail-biter, Prannoy once again showed his big-match temperament as he fought back from a game down to outwit the world No. 1 Axelsen 13-21 21-15 21-16 in-front of his home crowd at the Roal Arena. The 31-year-old from Kerala, who claimed the Malaysia Masters Super 500 and reached the finals at Australian Open Super 500 this year, thus continued India's dream run at the World Championships as the victory sealed the country's 14th medal in the event. Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu won five of them, including a gold in 2019, and Saina Nehwal (silver and bronze) claimed two. Kidambi Srikanth (silver), Lakshya Sen (bronze), B Sai Praneeth (bronze) and Prakash Padukone (bronze) are the other medallists in singles.
