Aston Villa’s deadline day recruit, Leander Dendoncker, decided to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers to prove a point with his new club, according to transfer insider Dean Jones. Steven Gerrard oversaw a busy summer window at Villa Park and will now be hoping his latest signing can help turn their league fortunes around.

Dendoncker’s arrival from Wolves was the biggest moment of the final day of business for Villa, sealing a £15 million switch from their Midlands rivals.

The club had previously seen a £10 million offer rejected for the Belgium international’s signature but did enough to seal a deal late in the window.

Villa were also able to fend off interest from Arsenal in midfielder Douglas Luiz, turning down a £25 million bid for the Brazilian.
