DUBAI: Egyptian giants Al Ahly booked their place in the inaugural African Football League (AFL) semifinals on Tuesday after a 1-1 home draw with Simba SC saw them through on away goals.

The first leg had finished 2-2 in Tanzania, but Al Ahly’s vital away strikes ultimately proved the difference across the two legs.

Simba claimed the lead on Tuesday through Sadio Kanoute’s composed first-half finish to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the last four.

But resilient Al Ahly held on and equalized through Mahmoud Abdelmonem Kharaba a few moments later before celebrating their aggregate victory.

MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United’s defense of the League Cup ended with a 3-0 loss against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday that heaped more pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. An eighth defeat of the season in all competitions was the latest blow for English soccer’s most storied club, which looks in danger of suffering another season of disappointment. United lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and Saudi-backed Newcastle repeated that scoreline to raise further questions over Ten Hag’s ability to return the club to its former glories. First-half goals from substitute Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall put the visitors in control by the break and Joe Willock completed the scoring after an hour. United had won the cup in February by beating Newcastle at Wembley Stadium as Ten Hag ended the club’s six-year wait for silverware. But that is a distant memory now as his team’s season descended deeper into crisis. The Dutch coach, who won three league titles with Ajax, was mocked by Newcastle’s fans throughout the game as they chanted that he would be fired in the morning.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was pleased with his team's clinical display with the bat after defeating New Zealand by 190 runs on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Proteas came out on top against close competitors New Zealand, recording their first win over the Blackcaps since 1999 in the men's World Cup. Bavuma lavished praise on centurions Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen for their clinical display with the bat. To assist the Proteas win their sixth game in seven, De Kock blasted his fourth century of the World Cup, and Van der Dussen also slammed a ton.
New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Wednesday rued the series of injuries which has left the Black Caps in a difficult position as the World Cup enters the business end. New Zealand slumped to their third consecutive defeat as South Africa handed them a massive 190-run loss here on Wednesday. To add to their woes as many as five players, including regular skipper Kane Williamson (thumb), are battling injuries, leaving them with only 10 fit players in their squad of 15.
Folkestone have denied Faversham’s claim winger Jordan Ababio has joined them on a season-long loan - insisting he still has a role to play at Cheriton Road this campaign.
