Dumfries and Galloway curlers make good start to world title bid

Scotland’s curlers have made a good start in their effort to win back-to-back world titles.

Kirkgunzeon’s Grant Hardie and Stranraer duo Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan Jnr, as well as skip Bruce Mouat, are in action in the World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

They started their bid for glory on Saturday with a 10-3 win over Korea before beating the United States by the same scoreline later in the day.

However, they suffered an 8-4 defeat to Canada on Sunday before bouncing back with an 8-3 win over Italy.

And they continued that good form on Monday with an 8-2 win over New Zealand.

They looked set to notch up another win over Germany on Tuesday.

However, their opponents scored two in the final end to snatch an 8-7 victory.

On Wednesday they beat the Czech Republic 6-3 and Japan 7-5, their record of six wins and two losses putting them second in the table.

Today they play the Netherlands and Switzerland with their final group games tomorrow against Norway and Sweden.

Should they progress, the semi-finals are tomorrow with the medal games on Sunday.
