“Your Man Citys and Liverpools come to mind” – Exclusive: Kane Wilson on Forest Green’s change in approach

Forest Green Rovers had to change their game as the 2021/22 League Two season progressed and matches got tougher, defender Kane Wilson has exclusively told Football League World. 

Forest Green secured promotion to League One for the first time in the club’s history earlier this month but the battle for the title is set to go to the final day of the season – with Exeter City only below them on goal difference.

Rob Edward’s side flexed their attacking muscles by winning games 6-3, 4-0, and 4-1 earlier on in the 2021/22 campaign but after a wobble in February and March, it was a run of three 1-0 victories that helped them get back on track.

No League Two team has scored more goals than Forest Green this term and it is their attacking players that often get the plaudits – as they did at Sunday’s EFL Awards – but they have tightened things up in recent months and have the second-best defensive record in the division.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World after winning the League Two Player of the Season award, Wilson addressed his side’s change of approach when it got to the business end of the season.

“Yeah, things changed,” he said. “I’m not sure what changed when we stopped blowing teams away but I think as things got a bit more valuable, games got a bit harder. I think that’s just football in general.

“Only certain teams in the world can do that when teams get tough – your Man Citys and your Liverpools come to mind – but in League Two no game is easy.

“When it became tough going we had to change our game. We started getting 1-0 wins and we’ve got over the line. Now we can focus on the next goal which is, as we know, winning the league.”
