‘You’d have to drag him off the pitch’ - Mason Mount is Manchester United’s new mentality monster

Wherever Mason Mount has gone as an amateur and professional footballer, one theme runs throughout - his mentality is special.

“As a youngster, he was just so incredibly driven and wanted to be the best – always raising the bar of what he could achieve,” said dad Tony in 2021 ahead of England’s Euro 2020 semi-final with Denmark.

“Even now, having watched Mason play in the Champions League final and throughout this tournament, it’s still quite surreal to think that my son is an England player. We never looked further than the next game, who we were playing next, and I never imagined Mason would make it to the very top like he has.”

Chelsea is a massive stage to thrive on, and Mount has earned his dividends. A Champions League winners medal, a FIFA Club World Cup - and a start in a European Championship final for his country.

Mount is about to step into the brightest limelight since that stomach-churning Wembley defeat. Chelsea are an elite club but Manchester United are at a different level when it comes to global exposure.

Players have to have a certain mindset to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams and perhaps all of his former coaches would agree he has what it takes. That goes right back to the start.

Tony Mount had been a non-league footballer before going into coaching and at age four, Mason was spending one day a week training at the academies of Chelsea and Portsmouth.

“We [he and Mason] both have a lot of love for Portsmouth and he still comes down to watch the mid-week games whenever he can,” Tony said.
