'You are forgiven' - Manchester United fans make same point about Wout Weghorst after Real Betis win

Manchester United fans appeared to be in agreement that Wout Weghorst's goal against Real Betis means all is forgiven after he came under criticism following the defeat at Liverpool.

The Dutch striker, who is on loan with the Reds from Burnley, came under scrutiny this week after footage emerged of the United player touching the 'This is Anfield' sign in the tunnel before Erik ten Hag's men lost at Liverpool on Sunday. Weghorst released a statement on social media addressing the controversy, claiming that he was simply trying to annoy Netherlands teammate Virgil van Dijk.

Despite coming under criticism, attitudes towards the frontman seemed to have shifted after he got on the scoresheet in United's Europa League win over Real Betis on Thursday night. The 30-year-old reacted quickest when Scott McTominay's strike was parried by Claudio Bravo to convert the Reds' fourth and final goal against the La Liga side during the 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.

It was just Weghorst's second goal since signing for United on loan in January, and his first strike at Old Trafford. The Dutchman wheeled away in celebration as it was clear how emotional he was. After a disappointing weekend - and a controversial moment in the Anfield tunnel - Reds fans wanted to show their love for the striker after the win over Betis.

After the game, Weghorst's teammate Marcus Rashford - who was also on the scoresheet - explained how delighted the rest of the squad were for the Burnley loanee.
