Yilmaz and Barisic are Rangers conundrum Michael Beale must solve so mistakes are left back on the training pitch

Michael Beale must look to sort out the left-back position at Rangers with haste before mistakes will occur in crucial games.

It was Turkish fullback Ridvan Yilmaz that started the Light Blues 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim in Germany, with Michael Beale handing the youngster a vote of confidence after impressing in pre-season. It was a debut for Brazilian forward Danilo off the bench while summer signing Sam Lammers netted again to keep his goalscoring spree going in the infancy stages of his Ibrox career. But Yilmaz, who was a big recruit last season looks set to challenge number one choice Borna Barisic for the position.

But in the view of former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton, the tussle for the jersey at left-back is something that needs work. Rangers named youngster Johnly Yfeko as part of a back four in Germany, with regulars Ben Davies and John Souttar both absent. The 20-year-old has impressed Beale during close season but Hutton believes there are still gaps to be plugged in the heart of the defence.

He told Rangers TV: "We speak about pre-season, this is something they're going to have to work on, the gaps between fullback and centre half. Obviously they get a little bit of fortune but Yilmaz just has to go in there and clear the lines, get the ball out of the pitch and then this doesn't happen.

"Obviously the manager will be looking at this, especially the last game. They'll work on it on the grass and it will get better. Rather the mistakes out there than in actual games that mean something."

Rangers did recruit defender Dujon Sterling from Chelsea in the summer, but the Englishman is yet to make an appearance due to injury while returning Leon Balogun played from the start against Hoffenheim.
