Xavi: Barcelona Women are setting an example for the men’s team

Barcelona clinched their seventh Primera Division title in typically dominant fashion.

A 5-0 demolition of derby rivals Real Madrid saw them wrap up the season with six games still to play.

Their latest win gives Barcelona a gargantuan 22-point cushion and puts them completely out of reach, with opportunities still on the table to bank even more points.

The triumph puts them in perfect stead to host the upcoming El Clásico clash later this month at the Camp Nou. A sell-out crowd of the 99,000 capacity stadium will be the stage for the first leg of Barcelona vs Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final.

Former player and current Barcelona men’s manager Xavi has paid his respects to the women’s team and admitted they are leading the club as a whole by example.

“For several years [the women’s team] have been showing us the way with how they play, how they compete and the hunger they have despite winning everything last year,” the Barca icon said.

“We have been watching them and it’s a wonder to see them play. They are leading the way in the same way as the Dream Team did in their day or as Pep [Guardiola’s] Barca side did later. They are an example for the men’s team.”
