"WTF man": Moment sudden downpour floods Market Street as shoppers dodge

A sudden downpour in Manchester city centre left Market Street flooded — and shoppers dodging a huge puddle.

Photos and videos sent to the Manchester Evening News this afternoon (April 29) show the huge puddle beside the Market Street Metrolink stop, next to the former Debenhams store. Shoppers can be seen dodging the puddle of brown water.

The heavens opened above town at roughly 4:30pm, with monsoon conditions appearing just after 5pm. Drizzle then continued for the rest of the hour, before spots of sun poked through the clouds shortly after 6pm.

“Market Street in Manchester is literally flooded next to the tram stop wtf man,” tweeted Joe at 5:45pm on Saturday. His videos show water that covers the soles of his shoes in a shallow section of the puddle.

The video also appears to show trams have continued running. As of 6pm, Metrolink reported a good service on all of its lines.

Although Saturday evening will be dry and cloudy, it looks like more rain will come on Sunday. Heavy downpours are expected at 2pm and 9pm tomorrow — with milder rain seen from 9am to the evening — spelling bad news for Manchester United fans, with their team’s home fixture against Aston Villa kicking off at Old Trafford at 2pm.
