WSL Wrap: Megan Connolly misfortune helps Aston Villa to first win

An own goal from Megan Connolly and an Ebony Salmon strike gave Aston Villa their first Women's Super League points of the season, as they won 2-0 at Bristol City.

The game was scoreless until the 77th minute, when Salmon's cross for Rachel Daly was deflected into her own net by Ireland midfielder Connolly, before Salmon doubled the lead herself nine minutes later with a powerful strike.

Connolly's club and international teammate Chloe Mustaki was an unused substitute as Villa joined newly-promoted Bristol City on three points at the foot of the WSL table.

Ireland captain Katie McCabe played all 90 minutes as Arsenal came from 2-0 down at half-time to win 6-2 at Leicester City.

McCabe assisted the second Gunners goal for Alessia Russo, which came after Cloe Lacasse halved the deficit just four minutes into the second half.

Caitlin Foord, Victoria Pelova and Stine Blackstenius all added their names to the scoresheet before Lina Hurtig made it six in injury time.

Chelsea shrugged aside the attention surrounding Emma Hayes' impending departure with a 3-0 win at Everton to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.

Jessie Fleming’s opener was followed by goals from Sam Kerr and former Everton loanee Aggie Beever-Jones as the London side eased to victory over a spirited Toffees side who caused the champions plenty of first-half problems.

Chelsea, who were playing for the first time since the announcement last weekend that Hayes will step down at the end of the season after 12 years as manager, remained clear of the chasing pack as a result.

That is due in part to a surprise defeat for Manchester City, who headed into the weekend in second place and three points adrift of the leaders.
