‘Wow!’ Jurgen Klopp blown away by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after Liverpool draw Merseyside derby

Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Jordan Pickford after the Everton goalkeeper denied Liverpool and earned the Toffees a point in the Merseyside derby.

Pickford made a string of saves – denying Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah – to frustrate Liverpool in an eventful but goalless derby at Goodison Park.

Everton midfielder Tom Davies and Liverpool striker Nunez both hit the woodwork in the first half and Luis Diaz suffered the same fate after the break, while Pickford also tipped a strike from Salah onto the post in the dying seconds.

Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady thought he had scored a second-half winner when he turned home Neal Maupay’s effort but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.

The goalless draw means Liverpool have now dropped nine points this season and remain six behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, who play their game in hand tomorrow.

Everton, meanwhile, stay amid the relegation places but will be buoyed by their performance against arch-rivals Liverpool.

Reds boss Klopp said: ‘It was a real derby, super intense and full of really spectacular moments.

‘I think we hit the post three times and there were a few unbelievable saves from Pickford – wow, what can you do?

‘In this game, easy and free-flowing is not possible. You have to dig deep, that’s what we did. A 0-0 draw sounds strange, but that’s it.

‘It was a super intense week for us. We had a really tough game that went to the wire [against Newcastle on Wednesday], then a few days later you play here.

‘If you open up with a goal, the situation can look different. I don’t know how many derbies I’ve had now – quite a few – but it’s always difficult here.’
