"Wouldn't even be surprised" - Journalist drops Tottenham transfer verdict involving £85.5m star

Tottenham could have been in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez as well, believes journalist Jacque Talbot.

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked to both Liverpool and Manchester United with Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda claiming on Friday that the former have won the race for his signature, but Talbot thinks Spurs may also have been in the equation for the Uruguayan.

As per Sky Sports, Liverpool made Nunez their No.1 target after his impressive season at Benfica.

They state that United are also interested in the Uruguayan forward, who scored 34 goals in 41 appearances in the campaign that has just passed.

The two Premier League outfits seemed to face a difficult task getting Nunez out of the Estadio da Luz this summer with Benfica reportedly wanting £85.5m for their talisman, but it appears as though Jurgen Klopp’s men have made a crucial breakthrough.

Getting that fee would see Benfica make a significant profit after signing him from Almeria for around £20m back in 2020.

Talbot has told GIVEMESPORT that he would not be surprised if Tottenham were also sniffing around Nunez.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “I wouldn’t even be surprised if Spurs were in there, to be honest. I thought it was [Lautaro] Martinez first and foremost. Yeah, I mean, there is a lot of buzz around him.”

If Nunez, who has been described as a “sensational talent” by football reporter James Dodd, is allowed to leave Benfica this transfer window and his options are Tottenham, Liverpool and United, there was probably only ever one choice, really.
