"Would be a massive boost" – Journalist drops big West Ham claim after unexpected update emerges

Having Angelo Ogbonna back in action before the end of the season would be a “massive boost” for West Ham, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 13-cap Italy defender suffered a serious knee injury against Liverpool back in November and was expected to miss the remainder of the campaign.

When Ogbonna. 6 ft 3, sustained the injury in the win over the Reds almost five months ago, David Moyes all-but confirmed that he won’t play again until next season.

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are usually season-ending, and Ogbonna playing again in 2021-2022 looked a tall order.

After the Hammers centre-back underwent surgery, Moyes said: “It’s really sad because he’s a great team player and his performances have been great. I think it would be hard for Angelo to be back this season.”

However, the Evening Standard have provided a promising update on the 33-year-old’s condition and believe that his season might not be over after all.

The report states that while Ogbonna is not yet back on the grass, he has started work in the gym, with the Hammers ‘hopeful’ that he can play again this term.

With West Ham still in the Europa League and also hoping to qualify for Europe in some capacity through the Premier League, O’Rourke reckons that having Ogbonna back in the fold would be a huge lift for Moyes.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It would be a massive boost to get Angelo Ogbonna back, who was in really good form for West Ham prior to the cruciate ligament injury he picked up against Liverpool.”

Without knowing when Ogbonna will return to the grass, it’s impossible to predict exactly when he could be back in first-team action.
