World Water Day: Expert urges government to ensure safe water access
A water resources and development expert, Michael Ale, has that clean and safe water has always been a luxury the Nigerian masses cannot afford. lamented
Ale, who disclosed that obtaining clean and safe water has become expensive and only affordable to the rich, declared that the government must invest heavily in the water sector to ensure that the masses can access safe and clean water.
The engineer stated this on the occasion of the celebration of World Water Day, scheduled to hold on March 22, 2025.
Ale said: “Africans and specifically Nigerians are reminded of the stark reality that clean and safe water is a luxury only accessible to the rich. The poor and vulnerable are left to suffer from the lack of access to this basic human right.”
Stressing that the theme for this year’s World Water Day is “Glacier Preservation,” Ale, who is the co-founder and President of the Safe Water Africa Community Initiative (SWACI), stressed that the challenges facing poor Nigerians and Africans in accessing clean water are numerous.
“One of the major issues is the high cost of drilling boreholes, which is often the only source of clean water in many communities.
The cost of drilling a borehole, for example, in Nigeria can range from ₦1,500,000 to ₦2,600,000, depending on the location and depth of the borehole. This is a sum that is far beyond the reach of many Nigerians living in poverty,” he said.
Ale added that his organization’s focus is to commemorate World Water Day with various programs aimed at raising awareness of the current water crisis plaguing Africa.
