World Cup 2022 draw: England could face Wales or Scotland as Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal set revenge job

The 2022 World Cup finals draw has been made, with England facing United States, Iran and one of Wales, Scotland and Ukraine in the group stage.

Wales will face Scotland or Ukraine in a play-off final in June to decide the fourth team in Group B. Scotland and Ukraine's play-off semi-final was postponed due to the Russian invasion.

For the first time in the tournament's history, it will be held in the Middle East and in the winter - meaning disruption to many domestic leagues. Reigning champions France, spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, will again be among the favourites, along with new world top-ranked nation Brazil.

As a result of the rescheduling of the tournament, the Premier League will start six weeks after the conclusion of the current campaign. The curtain will be raised on November 21, with the final scheduled for December 18.

Manchester United and Man City will be well represented with England, France, Brazil and Belgium among the nations in the draw. Euro 20202 winner Italy are notable absentees, as they were in Russia 2018, after losing to North Macedonia in the playoffs.

For Euro 2020 runners-up England, the upcoming World Cup is a chance for them to continue their progress under Gareth Southgate and win the tournament for the first time in 56 years.
