'No thanks' — Manchester United fans split after Youri Tielemans £25million claim

Manchester United are set to target two midfielders in the summer window; one to fill the already existing hole in defensive midfield and another most likely to replace Paul Pogba if the French midfielder leaves when his contract expires. It's also believed that the club want to sign a right-winger and a striker in the summer as well.

Declan Rice has been a name long linked with United, but with a £100m plus price tag — with some outlets reporting that the potential cost might reach as high as £150m — the club will have to save money elsewhere. And this is where Leicester midfielder Youri Tielesmans may come in for United.

The Telegraph report that with Tielemans' contract expiring in 2023, Leicester are willing to sell the Belgian midfielder for around £25m in the summer and he would offer a similar skillset to what United expected from Pogba. But the caveat is that the 24-year-old wants to play in the Champions League with his next club.

This may spell bad news if United are interested in the player. The club are out of the Champions League after a disappointing 2-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid and a top-four finish looks unlikely unless Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur collapse under the weight of expectation.

Not being able to boast Champions League football has not been a problem in the past for United in past windows, but given it has now been five years since the club last won a trophy and nearly a decade since the team last won a Premier League title, the factors that have offset this in the past may be starting to dissipate. And Tielemans might not be the only player that this affects.
