‘World class’ - Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi breaks silence on Mason Greenwood bid

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has branded Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood as “world class” and says he would defend the player in the public eye.

A number of Marseille fans have protested over their club’s interest in the 22-year-old regarding previous sexual assault allegations, charges that were dropped in February 2023. Greenwood has always denied all allegations.

MEN Sport understands Marseille are one of two clubs who have formally tabled bids for the forward, with Lazio also submitting an offer. Marseille are in advanced talks over a deal for Greenwood following a productive meeting with United over his future.

When asked about Greenwood in his debut press conference, new Marseille boss De Zerbi said: “He hasn’t signed, there’s not much to say. He’s a world-class player. I don’t know his background.

“No matter the player, once they sign here, they become like my children. I protect them through thick and thin. Maybe, in private I’ll pull their ears, but in public, I’ll defend them like my sons.”

Other European clubs have been linked with Greenwood, who scored 10 goals on loan at Getafe last season. He was spotted participating in individual training on Monday, a day before United began their pre-season preparations.

An internal club investigation was conducted by United following the allegations and subsequent arrest in January 2022. After receiving backlash for attempting to reintegrate Greenwood back into the senior squad, a statement in August stated that the player would continue his career elsewhere.
