Former Man United attacker Mason Greenwood set for quick England return after Marseille transfer

Departed Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood could play his first game in England for more than 30 months in August.

The 22-year-old’s most recent outing in his home country - also his final United appearance - came in a 1-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford on January 22, 2022. Greenwood was arrested eight days later on suspicion of committing sexual offences and was suspended by United.

The allegations - which the footballer has always denied in full - were discontinued in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses. In August, United stated that the forward would continue his career away from Old Trafford following the conclusion of a club investigation.

Club officials of the time had initially tried to reintegrate Greenwood back into the senior squad but received fierce backlash, and a loan to Getafe was subsequently agreed. His 10 goals in Spain last season attracted the attention of Marseille, who agreed his permanent transfer for £26.6m this week.

There has been fury among some Marseille fans over his arrival due to the previous charges against him. Asked about this backlash, Greenwood said at his unveiling on Thursday: “I am aware of all this, of course, but I do not want to enter into any controversy.

"I already expressed my feelings last year [a press release from August]. Today, all of this is now behind us.” He added he wishes to “focus on the football and focus on the off-field with my family”.
