Wolves were 'hopeful of signing' £9m star at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘were hopeful’ of signing Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill today, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 26-year-old was reportedly on the radar of the Midlands outfit, but it now seems as though he will be staying put at Turf Moor until at least January.

Earlier today, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook tweeted that Wolves have ‘shown an interest’ in Brownhill as they consider options capable of improving their engine room.

However, Crook also stated that it didn’t appear as though Bruno Lage’s charges were going to ‘pursue’ the former Manchester United academy player in the final hours of the window.

Brownhill arrived at Burnley via a £9 million deal from Bristol City back in January 2020 and quickly established himself as a crucial player for the Clarets.

In 78 Premier League appearances for Burnley, the combative engine room operator only registered six goal contributions, yet his overall play is what really caught the eye.

And Brownhill is already proving his worth in the Championship, finding the back of the net on four occasions in his first seven league games of the season, setting up one further strike.

Wolves could be set to lose Leander Dendoncker before tonight’s 11 pm deadline, but Jones doesn’t believe Burnley are willing to sanction Brownhill’s sale, meaning he won’t be the player to replace the Belgium international.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “One player they were hopeful of arriving today was Josh Brownhill.

“He could have become a great late addition to the squad, but I’m hearing that Burnley have decided he’s not going to leave.”
