Wolves urged to avoid 'disaster' transfer decision before summer window
Joao Moutinho is eyeing his next career challenge with no new Wolverhampton Wanderers contract close to being agreed, reports coming out of his native Portugal are suggesting.
Moutinho, who is now 35, signed a two-year contract in the summer of 2018 after joining Wolves following their promotion back to the Premier League under compatriot Nuno.
He agreed a two-year extension in the winter of 2019, which runs until this coming summer, but there is no imminent sign of an agreement being reached to lengthen his stay at Molineux beyond that.
Moutinho has scored twice this season in 31 appearances for club and country, and he’s found the net twice in old gold; Moutinho netted the winner at Manchester United and then also opened the scoring in their recent win at Brentford.
Boss Bruno Lage has continued to rely on the veteran, and he even argued earlier in the season that Moutinho still has five more years of playing left in him: “Last time I spoke with him (about his plans) he wanted to be a manager. I think he has five more years to play, then he can be a manager.
“What I want to say, from my point of view, is that I’m very happy with him. The personality, the way he works, the way he wants to be in training, even the way he talks with the other guys to help them to understand better the way we play.
“He needs to enjoy every day and wait for what happens. It depends on him. If he’s training hard, rests, knows his body, he can continue to play. I cannot predict the future, even just for myself, I live day by day.”
Lage also reiterated how relaxed he was about Moutinho’s precarious contract status, which is also the same for teammates Romain Saiss and Marcal.
