Wolves: ‘Huge’ if £40m star signs new contract at Molineux

If Wolverhampton Wanderers are able to tie star midfielder Ruben Neves down to a new contract ‘it’d be huge’ for the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old has just over two years remaining on his existing deal and has reportedly been attracting interest from some of the Premier League’s top sides in recent months.

According to The Sun, Wolves were open to the idea of sanctioning Neves’ exit last summer as their owners Fosun were keen to raise funds to overhaul Bruno Lage’s first-team squad.

It was claimed that the Midlands outfit were set to demand £35 million for the Portugal international amid interest from Arsenal, yet he ended up staying put at Molineux.

And speculation over Neves’ future resurfaced during the January transfer window, with The Sun stating that Manchester United were weighing up an offer for the technically gifted ace, whose price tag rose to £40m.

However, Wolves technical director Scott Sellars revealed in a recent interview with Express & Star (via 90min) that the club haveopened talks with Neves over a fresh deal in an attempt to ward off the extensive interest.

“We’re obviously talking to him, and we all know how much he loves playing for the club,” said Sellars. “We know how much he has settled here, but he is also an ambitious young man.

“As with all players, you try and have an open dialogue with them and their representatives to come to the best scenario for the club and the player.”

Jones confirmed that a new deal is on the table for Neves but believes his future could ultimately could down to ‘whether anyone comes forward with an actual offer’ for him.
