Wolves have 'held negotiations' over 'club-record' £51m deal at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers have ‘held negotiations’ with Sporting over Matheus Nunes but there are fears that the midfielder will not be interested in a club-record move to Molineux, according to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

Wolves finished Bruno Lage’s first season at the helm – following his appointment last summer – 10th in the Premier League and it appears he is keen to welcome Nunes to the West Midlands.

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves remain locked in talks with Sporting as they look to lure Nunes away from the Portuguese top flight.

The report suggests a bid in the region of £40million could be in the pipeline, but the eight-cap Portugal international has a £51million release clause written into his contract, which Sporting could hold out for.

Agreeing to fork out either of those hefty figures would result in Nunes overtaking Fabio Silva as Wolves’ club-record signing.

However, the West Midlands outfit are facing competition for the midfielder’s signature as it is understood that Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are among 10 clubs mulling over whether to test Sporting’s resolve.

Nunes finished the 2021/22 campaign with four goals and five assists to his name, having racked up half-a-century of appearances.

Taylor understands Wolves have stolen a march on the likes of Manchester City by already heading to the negotiating table over Nunes.

However, the journalist has raised concerns that the 23-year-old would snub the opportunity to link-up with Lage’s side.
