Wolves confirm head coach Bruno Lage will miss Chelsea match

Bruno Lage will miss Wolverhampton Wanderers’ trip to Chelsea on Saturday after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Wolves boss won’t travel to Stamford Bridge with the squad for the game against Chelsea after testing positive earlier this week. Lage was unable to partake in his pre-match press conference, so goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts filled in for him.

Lage will watch the Chelsea game from home as Wolves bid to end their wretched run of form in the capital. Last weekend’s dire defeat to Brighton was Wolves’ third straight loss and seventh in 10 Premier League matches.

Wolves can still secure Europa Conference League football, but they must better the results of seventh-placed West Ham in their final four matches. After the Chelsea game, Wolves host Manchester City and Norwich before travelling to Liverpool on the final day.

As self-isolation is no longer a legal requirement, Lage has been on the training ground over the past few days, keeping his distance from the players and staff. There is a chance he could be back in the dugout against Man City on Wednesday.

“He’s done a test, with no symptoms, and it’s come up positive,” said Roberts. “He’s still been out there from a distance, doing the main parts of the work. Tomorrow he isn’t going to travel, which is a shame because we need him as he’s our leader.”
