Bruno Lage reveals two Chiquinho plans as Wolves weigh up transfer move

Bruno Lage is open to loaning Chiquinho out next season if the winger ‘doesn’t have the space to grow up’ at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Chiquinho has only played 204 minutes in the Premier League since arriving at Wolves in a £3millon transfer from Estoril in January. The 22-year-old has often watched from the bench as Daniel Podence, Hwang Hee-chan, Pedro Neto and Francisco Trincao have jostled for position out wide.

He grabbed Wolves fans’ attention with an eye-catching display as a substitute in Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Chelsea. He set up both goals as Wolves fought back from two-nil down to seal an unlikely point.

Chiquinho made his first Wolves start as a wing-back in the 5-1 defeat to Manchester City last week. He was the stand-out Wolves player on the night and Lage has been impressed with his compatriot.

"The most important thing is the impact and personality the kid has,” said Lage. "Three or four months ago he played for Estoril, some games he played in the first XI and some games he jumped from the bench.

"He came here and everything is new - the rhythm is different - and he's helped the team. That's the kind of player we want in our club, a player with personality to continue to work and grab with both hands the little chances we give them.

"He played against Chelsea for 15 minutes and the next day he came training as hard as usual. That's the character and personality we want, but we need to understand that to grow up these players need experienced and top players (around them).

"That's the challenge to build the team. We need a good spine and players with experience in the Premier League and then three or four players like Chiquinho, with time and opportunities to grow up.”
