Wolves: £25m star now 'next on list' after Nunes deal at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned their attentions towards luring Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos to Molineux after landing Matheus Nunes, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The West Midlands outfit smashed their transfer record when they parted with £42.2million to sign Nunes from Sporting earlier this week, but it appears they are preparing to head back to the Portuguese capital for head coach Bruno Lage’s next acquisition.

According to The Telegraph, Wolves are admirers of Ramos and mulling over whether to head to Benfica with a big-money bid.

However, Lage is facing competition for the 18-cap Portugal under-21 international as the report suggests Southampton and Newcastle United are also interested.

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that ‘Lage has called Ramos personally to find out whether this deal is possible’, while reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are yet another suitor.

But it appears that Southampton may be in the driving seat when it comes to negotiating a deal for the 21-year-old, who has already made a prolific start to the new campaign.

That is because it is understood that Saints have opened talks with Benfica over a £25million transfer and held a meeting ahead of his current employers’ Champions League third qualifying round second leg win over Midtjylland last week.

Talbot understands that Lage has set his Wolves players a target of breaking back into a European competition after finishing 10th in the Premier League standings last term.

The journalist believes the Portuguese, who was appointed as the Molineux outfit’s head coach in the summer of 2021, has set his sights on landing Ramos as he looks to achieve that aim.
