WNL round-up: Peamount held as Shelbourne move clear at the top

Peamount were held to a 1-1 draw by Bohemians while there were wins for Shelbourne, DLR Waves and Athlone Town.

Peamount United 1-1 Bohemians

After a dominant 8-1 win over Cork City last weekend, Peamount were left frustrated by a determined Bohemians side, as they dropped two points at a wet and windy PRL Park.

After early pressure by Peamount, the visitors soon settled into the game and took the lead on 27 minutes through Lisa Murphy's looping header. Áine O’Gorman went close to equalising minutes later but her curling effort went just wide.

Stephanie Roche’s effort smashed the crossbar ten minutes after the restart, but she soon found the net to level the game. Murphy fouled Roche inside the box, and March’s player of the month scored from the spot, bagging her sixth goal this season.

The hosts should have gone in front minutes later, as Roche found Jetta Berrill whose volley went just over.

Peamount had two late chances to nick all three points. Karen Duggan dragged her effort to the left and wide on 80 minutes, before Roche’s curling shot was well saved by Rachael Kelly, who was impressive all afternoon.

Shelbourne 5-0 Treaty United

Shelbourne went two points clear in the Women’s National League this afternoon after a comprehensive victory over bottom side Treaty United.

The Limerick side endured a difficult afternoon, as Shelbourne remain unbeaten at Tolka Park this season.

Don O’Riordan’s side gave themselves a mountain to climb early on, as Shelbourne went 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes.

Megan Smyth-Lynch’s fantastic cross from the left found Gloria Douglas, whose header flew into the corner. Two minutes later, Alex Kavanagh’s free-kick cracked the crossbar and Jessie Stapleton was first to pounce to make it 2-0.
