Wishaw rue defensive lapses in Bonnyton Thistle loss but overall display pleases boss

Lapses in concentration cost Wishaw as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at Bonnyton Thistle in the West of Scotland Second Division, but boss Martin O’Neill isn’t concerned about the performance.

O’Neill saw some good aspects of play in a game that was over by half-time, and if Wishaw can cut out the individual errors, he believes they won’t be far away.

The Beltane Park gaffer said: “I was really pleased with the performance, but the scoreline was obviously very negative.

“We started really well, created some really good chances, didn’t take them, and then there was a 15 to 18-minute spell in the first half, a couple of lapses in concentration, that killed us.

“We were by far the more threatening team, in terms of creating chances and good play round about the midfield and forward areas, but we just never took any of our chances, which was frustrating.

“It was just really frustrating for everyone that we went in at half-time 3-0 down and they basically had been in our box three times.”

Wishaw roll on to a West of Scotland Cup second round tie against Premier League high-fliers Largs Thistle, and O’Neill said: “That’s an opportunity for us to maybe look at one or two players, guys who have been on the edges, and to be honest there’s no pressure on us whatsoever.

“We’ll go down there, set up to be nice and positive again, and hopefully we take one or two of our chances whilst maybe removing those individual lapses of concentration that cost us dearly on Saturday.”
