Wishaw boss Martin O'Neill looking to build a platform for future success

Martin O’Neill is trying to build a platform that makes Wishaw a more attractive club on and off the pitch, and is pleased with the progress he has made.

On the pitch, the new gaffer has brought in defender John Barr, who was with Blantyre Vics, and forward Bradley Gray on loan from Shotts until January.

Off the pitch, former Royal Albert gaffer Stewart Thomson is now part of the backroom staff, who will support the under-20s, oversee recruitment and look at opposition.

Experienced left-back Steven McGurgan has also accepted a player/coach role.

O’Neill reckons a maximum of two more players are needed to give him the squad he wants as he bids to climb the West of Scotland Second Division from their current third-bottom spot.

He said: “We want Wishaw to be more attractive, whether that’s people coming to watch the team, or players that we want to bring in.

“Maybe it’s a destination that players will consider, now.

“Guys like John Barr maybe didn’t see themselves coming to the club, but what we’ve been able to o is speak to him more about the bigger picture.

“We’re hopeful of bringing in a striker ahead of the Bonnyton Thistle game on Saturday, which will help the cause as well.

“We’re getting a couple of people back from injury in the next week or so. Andy Gilchrist, who is a bit of a mainstay in the team but pulled his hamstring just as I got here.

“If we get him back fit, I think we’re only looking to add another one or two.”

On building his backroom team, O’Neill said: “I’m looking to bring in people who are experienced and a good influence on the younger players at the club.
