Wishaw boss determined to end winless streak when they visit Larkhall Thistle

Martin O’Neill hopes Wishaw can start the New Year right when they first foot Larkhall Thistle this weekend – and give their survival bid a shot in the arm.

The Beltane Park gaffer and his side are currently second bottom of the West of Scotland Second Division and remain in the hunt for their first win since September, after Saturday’s home match with Caledonian Locomotives fell victim to the weather.

Wishaw haven’t won since they defeated Ardrossan Winton Rovers 2-1 in September and they sit a few points away from escaping the drop zone, going into the second half of the season.

Eleventh-place Larkhall are on a six-game unbeaten run in the division and will pose plenty of problems for Wishy, but O’Neill says his side are determined to take something from the game.

He said: “We know the guys up at Larkhall. Their manager, Brian Crawford, has done a great job there, winning promotion last year, and they are on a good unbeaten run right now, so it will be a difficult test for us.

“It is one we are looking forward to though and it is a bit of a local derby.

“We’ve just got to focus on ourselves.

“There is definitely a determination about the group to make sure that we show real endeavour to get something out of every game, irrespective of who we play against.

“The guys have been training well and we will give it our best shot.”

On last week’s call-off, he added: “It is just unfortunate. There’s been so much rainfall and the park was pretty boggy.

“We will need to try and come up with something before the Larkhall game, and make sure we stay active.”

Kick-off on Saturday at Gasworks Park is scheduled for 1.30pm.
