Wishaw appoint new boss after Yoker Athletic win ends run of three defeats

Wishaw have appointed Martin O'Neill as their new boss after a win at Yoker Athletic on Saturday ended a run of three defeats and hauled them off the bottom of the West of Scotland Second Division.

The Beltane Park club last week interviewed candidates for the hot-seat and have handed the reins to ex-Kilmarnock and Clyde defender O'Neill after interim gaffer Steven McGurgan guided them to a 2-1 win.

Former boss David Dunn quit the club last month amid a run of poor results, but Wishaw claimed their first win since then, with a battling display.

They came from 1-0 down to win, thanks to strikes from Ross McQueen and Luke Clark.

U20s manager Scott Gemmell was assisting interim boss McGurgan at the weekend and he said: “Steven has tried to bring that togetherness to the squad and that showed on Saturday.

“It is not nice being down at the bottom of the league, so it is great to get three points.

“It was an excellent goal to win it. It was a long ball from Steven McGurgan over the top and Luke headed it back across goal past the keeper.

“We were 1-0 after 10 minutes and in previous games, our heads would have gone down. But that didn’t happen, we kept playing football and got an equaliser about 30 minutes in.

“Ten minutes from the end Luke popped up and we defended for our lives to get the points.”

Wishaw now travel to Lugar Boswell Thistle in round two of the South Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Gemmell added: "We want to build on this performance now.

“The players should take a lot of belief. There was a lot of good football played and a couple of really good goals scored. We want to go on a run now to build confidence."

Kick-off at Rosebank Park on Saturday is 2pm.
