Willock lively, Trippier stars again: Newcastle vs Aston Villa half-time ratings

Newcastle hold a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa at the break thanks to Kieran Trippier's free-kick goal

There was an early stoppage when Fabian Schar picked up a head injury following an accidental clash with Kieran Trippier, but the Swiss defender was OK to continiue.

The Magpies were pressed well, although chances to few and far between. Joe Willock fired over and then Chris Wood flicked a header wide after good work from Ryan Fraser.

But Newcastle got the goal their play deserved when Willock burst forward and was fouled by Callum Chambers. VAR replays showed it was just outside the box, but Kieran Trippier rocketed the free-kick home to give United the lead.

Wood could have done better with a long-range effort following more good work from Willock, while Javier Manquillo received treatment after an awkward fall. Paul Dummett replaced the Spaniard just before the break.

Here's how Lee Ryder has rated the Newcastle players so far.

Not a great deal to do well but organising back four well.

Another goal to add to the collection. Keeping the likes of Digne and Coutinho quiet.

Battled on with a head wound.

Battling hard on his debut. Not nervous at all.

Caused problems on the overlap before coming off with injury.

Picking passes and trying to find a way through Villa defensive rearguard.

Has looked lively. Drew the foul that led to Trippier's free-kick.

Another cracking display. Loves a tackle this fella. Can't argue with his defensive work.

Has glided past Digne and put in a couple of good crosses with nobody connecting.

A couple of piercing runs.

Looked keen to take the penalty before VAR overturned it. Dominating the aerial battle.
