Wigan Athletic 0-2 Cardiff City: Perry Ng and Yousef Salech strike in convincing Bluebirds win

Cardiff City dug deep to secure a convincing 2-0 victory at Wigan Athletic, bouncing back from their first league defeat of the season in perfect fashion.

Perry Ng’s first-half strike set the tone before substitute Yousef Salech converted a 96th-minute penalty to seal the points at The Brick Community Stadium.

It was a performance built on resilience, with the Bluebirds having to withstand pressure for much of the second half before Salech’s late strike sparked jubilant celebrations in the away end.

The Bluebirds were sharp from the off, with Isaak Davies and Cian Ashford causing problems out wide, while Ryan Wintle forced Sam Tickle into a fine save from distance.

Their early pressure told when Rubin Colwill and Ng combined neatly on the edge of the box on 17 minutes, before the right-back’s low effort deflected off Matt Smith and nestled inside the near post.

Cardiff had further chances, with Ashford and Joel Bagan linking up well on the counter, but the Latics remained a threat.

Christian Saydee spurned their best opportunity when clean through, denied by Nathan Trott’s strong stop. Fraser Murray and Will Aimson also went close as the half wore on.

Rubin Colwill fired over just before the whistle, hammering a left-footed effort from the edge of the area inches over the crossbar.

It was an action-packed first 45 at both ends at The Brick Community Stadium, but the Bluebirds took the lead into the break.

The second period proved far less fluent than the first. Both sides struggled to create clear openings, with the game turning into a physical battle.

Callum Robinson came close shortly after the restart, snatching at a half-chance inside the box, while Ng tested goalkeeper Tickle from distance with a bobbling effort.
