Why Rasmus Hojlund has been dropped for Manchester United vs Newcastle

Erik ten Hag has rested Rasmus Hojlund for Manchester United's game against Newcastle to keep the striker fresh ahead of the last two games of the season.

Since his return from a muscle injury in March, Hojlund has started 10 successive games for United but has been named on the bench for the visit of Newcastle to Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes has returned to the starting line-up after a brief stint on the sidelines with injury and is set to lead the attack, with Amad and Alejandro Garnacho on the wings.

United have also received the boost of Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford returning to the squad after their injuries. "It's very good because you have seen in the last few games, we only had academy players on the bench," Ten Hag told Sky Sports when asked about Fernandes and Rashford returning to the squad.

"Now we have some senior players who can make a difference. They are working so hard, they want to be involved in this season and want to fight for this club. We know where we are in the league, so this game is a must-win."

Ten Hag was asked to clarify why Hojlund was on the bench and said: "We want to keep him fresh. It's a long season for young players - all the young players - and sometimes you see his energy levels are dropping.
