Why patience will be a virtue for 'exceptional' Rico Lewis at Man City

Back in May, Pep Guardiola described Rico Lewis as “exceptional” and described him as the reason Manchester City were able to turn their season around. Lewis began playing in a run of games for City just after the World Cup, getting his first start In the win away at Leeds in December.

He went on to make 14 appearances in the league for City that season and a further two appearances in the Champions League which included a maiden goal.

Guardiola was insistent on not loaning out Phil Foden while he developed as a young player. While this rule was broken for the likes of James McAtee, a point should certainly be made at the fact that Lewis has not been loaned out and continues to be in and around the first team.

Lewis’ appearances did become watered down however, with Kyle Walker’s resurgence alongside City’s as a club. That is not to say that the 18-year-old was frozen out of the side altogether but appearances did begin to dry up somewhat.

With Walker recently signing a new deal until 2026, Lewis will find what is one of the best right-backs in Premier League history ahead of him in the competition to play. It is probably best to remember however, that Lewis will still be just 22 when Walker’s extension runs out.
