Why Manchester United are selling Scott McTominay as midfielder set for Napoli medical

Scott McTominay could undergo a medical in Naples today as he edges closer to completing a £25m move to Serie A side Napoli.

The Manchester United midfielder is set to travel to Italy to finalise a transfer that would see him end his 22-year association with his boyhood club, with the two clubs agreeing a fixed fee for the 27-year-old.

McTominay is attracted by the idea of a new challenge at a club that won the Serie A title in 2022/23 and enjoy significant support. The Scotland international is also keen on the idea of playing in a new league and Napoli boss Antonio Conte had hoped to land him.

United were reluctant to lose their academy graduate, having rejected a £30m offer from West Ham for him last August, before he then went on to enjoy his best season at the club, scoring 10 times last season.

But a combination of McTominay's desire to play regularly and the attraction of selling academy players under the Premier League's financial rules has led to them agreeing a deal with Napoli, having turned down an offer from Fulham earlier in the window.

McTominay has come off the bench in all three of United's competitive games so far this season and although he started the FA Cup final in May, there was an expectation he would have to settle for a bit-part role this season.

United had been unable to sell Casemiro, having considered offloading the Brazilian earlier in the window, and the impending arrival of Manuel Ugarte, coupled with the return to form and fitness of Mason Mount, had left McTominay on the fringes and United were unable to guarantee him the starting position he
