Why Liverpool FC won't benefit from Raheem Sterling's potential Man City transfer

Liverpool will earn no further payments from Manchester City should Raheem Sterling leave the club this summer.

After seven years of unprecedented success, it looks like the England international may have one foot outside the Etihad Stadium doors. Over the weekend, Sterling's links with a move to Chelsea have accelerated, with a £35million move rumoured by numerous parts of the media.

Despite notching 19 goal contributions in the Premier League alone this season, Sterling has not been able to hit his own astronomically-high standards. In 2018/19 - when the forward received the FWA Footballer of the Year - he contributed to a staggering 42 goals.

He has been a key part in Pep Guardiola's success in England but, as of late, he has not been the Catalan's go-to man. With only 12 months remaining on his current contract, a lack of game time has forced Sterling to assess his options and consider his next career move very carefully.

Back in 2015, Sterling made the shocking switch from Merseyside to Manchester in a deal worth a reported £44m, with the fee eventually rising to £49m with performance-related add-ons.

However, despite it being somewhat commonplace in the modern game, the Liverpool Echo have reported Jurgen Klopp's side will earn nothing from Sterling's potential sale.

This is because sell-on fees only apply to the original contract of a player transferring to another club. Sterling moved to the Etihad Stadium on a five-year deal, but extended his contract by a further three years back in 2018 - meaning any clause the Reds had, has now expired.
