Alan Shearer rates Man City transfer business against Premier League rivals Liverpool

Alan Shearer admits the signs are ominous for would-be challengers to Manchester City and Liverpool with both clubs already making their mark in the summer transfer window.

Having missed out on Harry Kane last summer, City turned their attentions to Erling Haaland and have signed the Norway goal machine from Borussia Dortmund for £51million. However, that move was promptly responded to by Jurgen Klopp as the Reds offset Sadio Mane leaving by recruiting Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

Both players had Manchester United interested before their intentions became clear. Haaland bolsters a City side that scored 99 goals in the Premier League alone without him last season, while Nunez fired 34 goals in 41 outings across all competitions to emerge on the radar for elite European clubs.

Haaland and Nunez will be expected to compete with established Premier League goal-getters for the top-scorer prize next season and Shearer - who tops the division's all-time charts with 260 goals - is excited to see that battle within a battle evolve at the Etihad Stadium and beyond.

He told Sky Sports : "They are two huge signings and two fantastic players. I'm certain that both players will score a lot of goals in the Premier League and I'm certain that both players will make their clubs better.

"I have seen bits of them in the Champions League obviously and they are two fantastic players. It's great for the Premier League that those clubs are able to attract that type of player and I look forward to watching them a lot next season."
