Why isn't Kilmarnock vs Rangers on TV? The reason behind Sky's shock picks revealed with Edinburgh Derby shunned
The selection process of TV picks have been a bug bear of dedicated followers of the cinch and now the jam-packed midweek slate of Premiership fixtures has punters asking fresh questions.
You see, there has been a growing call to both Sky and the SPFL to diversify the choices with followers of sides outwith Glasgow making the case for more encounters which don't feature Celtic and Rangers. And they have delivered...in the eyes of some. But a bumper midweek card with a trio of pulsating encounters will not be on the box. Hearts hosting Hibs, and title chasing Celtic vs Dundee will be PPV only. And it's the same story for Kilmarnock hosting Rangers at Rugby Park – an encounter which feels made for primetime.
TV cameras will be in attendance at Dingwall for Ross County vs St Mirren on Tuesday and Livingston vs Motherwell at the Tony Macaroni 24 hours later. Both games have relegation implications as calls to mix up selections have been heeded. But some feel the choice to shake it up when A-list fixtures are occurring only highlights the shortcoming of the existing agreement. It comes during a midweek where Sky are without Premiership action with BBC and ITV retaining exclusive rights to a lesser-spotted FA Cup midweek feast.
Expect Sky to be back for more after the split with the race to avoid the Premiership trap door poised to go down to the wire. The current broadcasting deal between the SPFL and Sky ensures the broadcasting behemoth can only head to the same venue four times in a season and show a total of 48 games per season.
But that will rise to five matches per stadia with the option to show 60 games per season when the new £30m five-year contract kicks in at the start of next season. Punters are seeking answers
